I have been handling classes for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. There is real evidence between both the cohorts in the way of approach, behaviour and maturity as a holistic element. Ofcourse, experience really enhances the overall social attitude of a person but one cannot wait or in other words the world cannot wait for you to go through ages to get that wisdom especially this era is super fast and expects everything right there near to perfection. So I was wondering can I do anything towards the gap filling of grooming or nurturing them strategically where you can raise the maturity level of the undergraduate students in par with the post graduates. There are many parameters I would like to attend to namely the inclusive aspect, networking and team spirit, knowledge sharing, perseverance and regularity. But in my perspective through my lens, I felt the regularity to classes is a real root cause or in other words manifests in so many different branches. It may not look straightforward though at first look as how one can relate a mere attendance or regularity to classes to lead to goodness or do bad. Let me try to share my views as why I think so. Firstly, If the student is regular to classes he or she excels in the subject and his/her focus is towards learning mostly than indulging in other distraction or unwanted acts. Secondly, this creates a very conducive environment for them to thrive, challenge, respect each others views, team up and develop mutual respect accepting as who they are as they spend more time together, so more time to understand each other. Thirdly, there are many international students whose visa and further life carrer can be affected due to lack of attendance. So now the question is, what can I do about it? or what can UAL do something about it? I consider this a real and senstive problem, as in my class many students absent stating various reasons 1. as it is just Year 0 or Year 1, so their grades don't really count much towards the final grade calculation, 2. It is a AM class, so cannot attend either they are lazy to start blaming weather. So I am thinking of creating some strategies to improve this to be the best I can. The thoughts are as follows 1. Strict rules to be brought in if there is habitual absentism 2. More close working between the admin team who handles the attendance, the visa and the academic teaching faternity. 3. Care of concern the teacher shows towards the students through regular interactions and willing to go extra mile to motivate students and make them understand the importance of physical presence which does more good just beyond academics-the most needed inclusive atmosphere to thrive I have already started exploiring these and I am starting to see improvement. At the end of the day I have learnt that kindness and patience wins hearts.
